When your air conditioner runs but the house never cools down, the cause is almost always one of a dozen problems. Work through this list from top to bottom — the first four are homeowner fixes, the rest need a licensed technician for professional AC repair.

Homeowner checks you can do in 10 minutes

1. A clogged air filter

A filter packed with dust chokes airflow across the evaporator coil. The system keeps running, the air coming out feels weak and lukewarm, and the coil may eventually freeze. Replace 1-inch filters every 30–60 days and 4–5 inch media filters every 6–12 months.

2. The thermostat is fighting you

Confirm the mode is Cool (not Fan), the setpoint is at least 3°F below room temperature, the schedule has not switched to an away program, and the batteries are fresh. A surprising number of AC-not-working calls end right here.

3. Tripped breaker or blown fuse

If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is silent, check the breaker panel and the outdoor disconnect. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, stop — repeated tripping usually means a shorted compressor, a failing fan motor or a wiring fault, and that is an emergency HVAC repair.

4. A blocked outdoor condenser

Grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, dryer lint and shrubs block heat rejection. Shut power off, rinse the coil from the inside out with a garden hose, and keep two feet of clearance on all sides.

Problems that need a licensed technician

5. Frozen evaporator coil

Ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines is a symptom, not the disease. It is caused by restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system to Fan Only for two to three hours to thaw, then call for diagnosis before running Cool again.

6. Low refrigerant from a leak

Air conditioners do not use up refrigerant. If the charge is low, there is a leak in a coil, a fitting, a Schrader valve or the line set. A proper repair means finding and fixing the leak, pulling a vacuum, then weighing in an exact factory charge.

7. Failed run capacitor

The most common single failure in residential cooling. Symptoms: a humming outdoor unit, a fan that will not start or needs a push, and a compressor that clicks then quits. It is an inexpensive part and a fast repair.

8. Bad contactor or control board

Pitted contactor points and failed relays stop the compressor from receiving 240 volts even though the thermostat is calling for cooling.

9. Condenser fan motor failure

If the compressor runs but the top fan does not spin, head pressure spikes, the unit overheats and safety switches shut it down. Left alone, this destroys compressors.

10. Compressor failure

Grounded windings, seized bearings or valve failure. On systems under 10 years old with a good warranty, replacement can make sense — see AC replacement options. Older units are usually better replaced whole.

11. Duct leaks and disconnected runs

Attic and crawlspace ducts commonly lose 20–30% of conditioned air. Rooms farthest from the air handler never satisfy. Duct sealing often fixes what looks like an undersized system.

12. The system is undersized or mis-sized

Oversized systems short cycle and leave the air clammy; undersized systems run non-stop on design days. A load calculation tells the truth.

When to stop troubleshooting and call

• Burning smell, smoke, or a breaker that trips repeatedly
• Ice on the lines that returns after thawing
• Water pooling around the air handler or furnace
• Indoor temperature above 85°F with infants, seniors or pets at home
• Loud grinding, screeching or hard-start banging
